The Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre (GNOAC) is a community-driven outdoor recreation facility located just north of Parry Sound in McDougall Township. Set on approximately 800 acres with nearly 50 kilometres of scenic trails winding through the rugged Canadian Shield landscape near Georgian Bay, the centre has grown from a small cross-country ski club into a year-round destination for outdoor recreation.

Georgian Nordic’s origins date back to 1980, when a group of local outdoor enthusiasts formed a cross-country ski club to develop and maintain ski trails in the Parry Sound area. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the organization expanded its trail network and became recognized as one of the regions’ key destinations for cross-country skiing. The club itself was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1984. In addition to Nordic skiing, paddling has long been an important part of the club’s identity. For many years the organization was known as the Georgian Nordic Ski and Canoe Club, reflecting its commitment to both winter and summer outdoor sports. The canoe and paddling program has provided coaching, recreational opportunities, and competitive racing for local youth and adults for nearly three decades.

Over time, Georgian Nordic secured access to more land and established a larger system of groomed trails that wind through forests, small lakes, and the granite ridges characteristic of the Parry Sound district. In the 2010s, the club began evolving into a true four-season outdoor recreation centre, through partnerships with community groups such as Get Outdoors Parry Sound. The facility was then able to expand its offerings to include mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and other warm-weather trail activities. These additions significantly increased the centers’ use beyond the winter season.

From the beginning, Georgian Nordic has relied heavily on volunteers and community support to build and maintain trails, organize events, and promote outdoor recreation. The dedication and perseverance of volunteers have played a vital role in the club’s development. Through volunteer opportunities, annual pass holders connect with others who share similar interests, strengthen community ties, and contribute to the activities and sports they enjoy throughout the year.

The centre continues to operate as a charitable organization, with funding generated through annual and day pass sales, donations, and ongoing community support. In recent years, Georgian Nordic has enhanced its infrastructure through new building projects and trail improvements made possible with federal and provincial funding, as well as community fundraising. These initiatives help ensure the centre remains a premier outdoor recreation destination for both residents and visitors to the Parry Sound region.

For many years, GNOAC has welcomed local teachers and their classes for ski and snowshoe outings at no cost. This community initiative gives students of all ages the opportunity to experience the joy of winter through outdoor recreation while discovering what the club has to offer. Several schools also participate in after-school ski clubs, where students attend weekly practices and compete in end-of-season school races.

GNOAC is also well known in the community for its Nordic ski youth programming, namely Jackrabbits, Racing Rabbits, and the Georgian Nordic Junior Ski Team. These programs help young skiers develop their skills and prepare for competitions at the provincial and national levels. The centre also hosts events such as the annual Sounder Ski Tour and Southern Ontario Team Sprints.

Today, Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre stands out as one of the Parry Sound region’s most valued outdoor recreation hubs. By promoting healthy lifestyles, youth development, and year-round access to nature, the centre continues to inspire residents and visitors alike to explore, connect, and stay active in the outdoors for generations to come.
